“Hopeless and helpless doth Aegeon wend,
But to procrastinate his lifeless end”
(Comedy Of Errors, act 1, sc. 1)
Comments. What is most extraordinary (about the presidential elections) is the incredible success of the propaganda machine. And the consequent belief, also held by obviously intelligent people, that their vote makes any difference. Notwithstanding the overwhelming data, some in front of their very eyes, about the obvious consonance of the democratic and republican platforms, so many still believe that their vote has meaning. Ask them why the “system” makes it impossible to have a third voice representing the 99%. The best answer possible is that the government represents the will of the people and if the 99% is not represented that is because the 99% does not want a third party. Even though they themselves – the apologists of Obama, in the instance – would like to see one.
Some have even heard or seen George Carlin’s sketch ending with the famous line, “It’s a big club and you ain’t in it. – … the table is tilted, the game is rigged – … the illusion of meaningless choice – … you have no choice, you have owners …- … they don’t care about you, at all, at all, at all…” And the same people in question probably laughed at the sketch. But that was “comedy”.
The dictum that opens George Bernays’ booklet “Propaganda” is ever true. Control the corporate media, control the syllabus of education and you can control everything.
Hopeless and helpless millions of voters will wend to procrastinate the illusion of the existence of a democracy.
