“…and ‘tis our fast intent
To shake all cares and business from our age,
Conferring them on younger strengths, while we
Unburdened crawl towards death.” (King Lear, act 1, sc.1)
Tips for use. Perfect opening for a retirement speech, a bit rough at the end but realistic. With a gentler touch Oliver Goldsmith says,
O, blest retirement! friend to life’s decline –
How blest is he who crowns, in shades like these,
A youth of labor with an age of ease!
On the other hand some said that life begins at retirement. Which, on the whole, brings us back to another Shakespearean quote already part of the blog, “Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so.”

In the play. Lear announces his plan to abdicate and to divide his kingdom among daughters Regan, Goneril and Cordelia. Regan and Goneril are evil, Cordelia is good.
